Layne Software
PO Box 30543
Columbia, MO 65205-3543
Thank you for ordering Layne Software's Well-Versed 2.0.
BEFORE you install LWV 2.0, you MUST update your CONFIG.SYS file,
usually found in the root directory (ex. C:\) of your hard drive.
Modify CONFIG.SYS to read: FILES=20
Consult your DOS manual on how to accomplish this update. You may be able to
use FILES=25 or less or you may need FILES=30. This varies depending upon
which version of DOS you are running under. Layne Software does not recommend
that you have any TSR's (Terminate and Stay Resident) applications running
concurrently with LWV 2.0. However, you can experiment with them
at your own risk. DAC's Lightning 5.52 disk caching utility seems
to work fine with LWV 2.0 but this can vary from computer to computer.
Layne Software does not recommend that you modify the datafiles of LWV 2.0
with any utility, such as Norton or other ASCII file viewers.
You could alter the indexing structure of the database and
produce a corrupted file. Of course, you can use Norton or
PC-Tools (for example) to copy the datafiles to backup diskettes.
Automatic installation procedures have been provided with LWV
2.0. Each of these will create a directory on your hard drive
under the name 'LWV' for which the path will be C:\LWV or
D:\LWV. Layne Software recommends that you update the PATH
statement of your AUTOEXEC.BAT file to include either C:\LWV or
D:\LWV as may be appropriate. Consult your DOS manual as
before. Be sure that DOS is in your PATH statement. This is always true if
you used the automatic installation of DOS, but it is a good idea to confirm
the PATH statement of your computer.
